DSCBA’s members and volunteers
stepped up to the plate to offer a
number of special virtual programs
in 2020. Dancing Without Limits, an
organization founded by four local high
school students and dancers—Shelby
Storm, Kylie Rhodes, Savannah Londre,
and Amanda Capovilla—started holding
in-person classes with DSCBA members
prior to COVID, and switched to Zoom-
based once shelter-in-place started. These
weekly classes have been incredibly
popular with our members!
Other virtual activities included Zoom Fun
with Miki & Zoe (siblings of Dr. Spinazzi,
who works with DSCBA’s members at
Charlie’s Clinic at UCSF Benioff Children’s
Hospital, Oakland), a three-week summer
program featuring basketball, drawing,
yoga, and dance; Bollywood Dance,
hosted by Asshna Bhandi, a local student,
featuring eight summer dance lessons;
and StoryTime with Nicole Fenstad,
including fairy tales read aloud by
characters in the stories.
Avery loves virtual
yoga class.
“For 15 years, Nicole has attended what she will forever call
‘Step Out,’ and she has thrived! The group’s emphasis on peer
interaction and support of one another through life’s challenges has been
fundamental to her growing into a mature, sensitive, considerate adult.
It helps that important life skills are integrated into a positive, creative
process including sharing, dancing, and crafting, all of which Nicole
mentioned when asked what ‘Step Out’ means to her. She added, ‘It
means to me that the group is like a guardian angel.’”
