The 2023 Silver Jubilee Gala marked an extra special milestone for the DSCBA as we celebrated 25 years of serving the Down syndrome community in the greater Bay Area. Held on May 6, 2023 at the iconic Claremont Club & Spa in Berkeley, the sold-out evening kicked off with guests being treated to a cocktail reception, a silent auction, wine tastings, and a wine pull. They also got a chance to purchase tickets to the Silver Drawing and a Heads or Tails Game. The reception gave guests an opportunity to say farewell to retiring Executive Director, Nancy Labelle, who has served the DSCBA for over 15 years!
The magical evening included dinner, a live auction, and dancing to the popular local cover band, Urban Sky. We welcomed back Mark Ibanez, retired KTVU Channel 2 - Sports Director, as Master of Ceremonies for the 8th year. The Jubilee is DSCBA’s largest annual fundraiser, and we raised over $221k with the Fund-A-Need raising over $60K for the DSCBA programs.
Dana Morris, DSCBA Board Chairperson, honored retiring DSCBA Executive Director, Nancy LaBelle, for her 15 years of service and for the incredible impact she’s had in making DSCBA the amazing organization that it is today. Flowers and a gift were presented to Nancy by self-advocates and DSCBA employees, Marissa and Joseph, in a very touching moment. Danville Mayor Robert Storer proclaimed May 6th as Nancy LaBelle Day! And Assemblymember, Tim Grayson made a special presentation.
Thank you to our 25th Anniversary Annual Empower Sponsor Chevron who has been a community partner for over 14 years. We are truly grateful for their continued support! Juliet Don and Katie Kabler from Chevron were on hand to present DSCBA with a check for $36k made possible through their coin box collections.
Community Impact Awards winners were Nicole Adler and Megan Portoni who inspired us with their dedicated and exemplary service to members with Down syndrome and their families.
The guest parent speaker, Diane Storm, gave a touching presentation about her talented artist daughter, Nicole, who has defied odds throughout her life, becoming an accomplished artist with gallery showings.
A lively live auction featured many unique packages donated by the community. There was something for everyone to bid on including yacht excursion, diamond earrings, Winemaker for a Day, a BBQ Pitmaster package, a Tahoe getaway, 49er tickets and more!
Local band, Urban Sky, performed at the dance party. A group of DSCBA members led by Eli Cooper surprised Nancy LaBelle with a special song which was the ultimate tribute.
Guests were treated to sweet candy favors from See’s Candy and Jelly Belly on their way out.

Power of Love 2022 Gala
The power of love was evident as DSCBA hosted the first in-person Gala since 2019 due to the pandemic. We loved seeing new and familiar faces and getting the chance to interact with everyone.
Leading up to the Gala, an online auction was held April 14-24, 2022 with 320 fantastic packages donated from the very generous community that helped raise $26,660 to support the DSCBA. Thank you to all the bidders who participated!
On May 7, 2022, nearly 200 attendees donned some groovy ‘60’s party attire for the “Power of Love 2022 Gala” at the beautiful and historic Diablo Country Club. The colorful tie dye shirts, bell bottoms and floral outfits set the tone for a fun and exciting event! The evening began with hors d’oeuvres and wine tasting offered by VIP Wine Sponsors, Las Positas Vineyards, Mauritson Wines and Rotta Winery. Attendees also participated in a wine pull and silent auction featuring delectable local desserts, fantastic wine baskets, sports collectibles and more. Those who purchased Golden Drawing tickets got a chance to win an amazing travel package that included $500 Southwest Gift Card AND $500 Marriott Bonvoy gift card.
We were honored to have Mark Ibanez, former KTVU Channel 2 Sports Director, back for the 7th time as MC. The program began when DSCBA Executive Director, Nancy LaBelle, entered the stage to the 1967 hit by The Turtles, “So Happy Together”. Nancy engaged the crowd in a sing along which started the celebration off right as we were truly SO HAPPY to be together in person again! Nancy went on to talk about the pivot to virtual programming and the vast impact the DSCBA has made during the pandemic with the help of a very generous community, amazing volunteers and a dedicated staff. Nancy was emotional as she talked about the importance of keeping families connected to each other as well as members with Down syndrome connected to their peers/friends which she stated is one of the most important things we do.
Bob Stolz and Juliet Don from Chevron, our Inspire Sponsor, presented the organization with a $21,890 donation made possible through coin boxes placed in Chevron stations. They have been a community partner for over 13 years, and we are truly grateful for the continued support!
Testimonials from the “The Power of Connection” video said it all as attendees watched how DSCBA empowers, inspires and supports the whole family. A livestream benefit concert with two American Idols became a new and happy adaptation to our normal Gala festivities on Sunday, May 2nd. Though we couldn’t gather in person, this professionally produced virtual event gave us the opportunity to bring live music into the homes of our guests and connect in a new way, while simultaneously hosting a week-long online auction fundraiser
The concert kicked off with VIPs participating in a lively sports trivia game with Mark Ibanez, Sports Director KTVU Fox 2. We then got a pleasant surprise from our Sapphire Sponsor, Chevron, when executive Robert Milner, presented our Executive Director, Nancy LaBelle, with a generous $38k check from their coin box collection. Chevron has been a community partner for over 12 years, and we are truly grateful for their continued support!
The night continued with a performance by American Idol and talented bassist, Casey Abrams, who entertained us with his cool jazz. He was followed by fellow American Idol alum and much-loved supporter of the DSCBA, James Durbin, who rocked the night away. The banter between Casey and James was fun and entertaining as they took questions from the audience and talked about their experiences on American Idol. The evening continued with home dance parties as we danced the night away with DJ Ashley Good spinning favorite songs for all to enjoy!
It was exciting to see the Fund-A-Need thermometer move up as guests donated online throughout the evening’s festivities. Simultaneously, the online auction heated up as bidders raced to get the winning bid before the 9pm closing. Among many great packages, a Pixar Tour was the top favorite, eventually going for $2,500. Thank you to the 128 bidders who participated in the online auction over a period of 9 days by bidding on 290+ amazing packages.
Overall, the Gala raised over $95k thanks to the support from our generous community that donated auction items, in-kind services, sponsorships and cash to our Fund-A-Need.
The Fund-A-Need was a virtual paddle raise this year and fell short, making only $25k of our $50k goal. It’s not too late to contribute to the fund which provides for:

GALACTIC ONLINE AUCTION 2020
For the first time ever due to the Covid-19 outbreak, our annual in-person gala fundraiser was converted into a Galactic Online Auction in May. This new format allowed many regular and new auction participants the chance to bid on silent auction items from the comfort of home. While we missed seeing so many friends of the DSCBA in person, it was extremely gratifying to receive an outpouring of support during these unprecedented times.
Thank you to the 226 registrants who participated over a period of 9 days by bidding on 350+ amazing packages donated from businesses and individuals. Over $136k was raised from the auction, Fund-A-Need cash donations, pre-registrations and sponsorships which help support ongoing programs. We can always count on our members and the greater community to come together when needed and this proved true in 2020.
A BIG THANK YOU to our Jedi Sponsor, Chevron, our Empire Sponsor, Nordstrom, Event Sponsors, John Muir Health and Prestige Printing & Graphics, Advertising Sponsors, Feldman Law Group, JSD Construction, Inc., Mass Mutual Northern California, and Wells Fargo Bank, and Droid Wine Sponsors Elliston Vineyards, Gallica and Sherri Kamaka of AAA for their wonderful support.

We celebrated our Anniversary in Style by Celebrating Everything 21!
We had many reasons to celebrate at the spring gala held on April 13, 2019 at the beautiful Diablo Country Club. Our theme, “We’ve Got 21!”, honors the significance of the 21st chromosome to the Down syndrome community during our 21st anniversary year. Over 280 people attended this magical evening and a record $225,000 was raised.
The night kicked off with a welcome glass of champagne, a silent auction with over 300 packages to bid on, a Golden Drawing with Ritz Carlton/Southwest Airlines prize, a wine pull and wine tasting table during the cocktail hour. Guests then moved to the ballroom for a delicious dinner. We were delighted to have KTVU Fox 2 Sports Director Mark Ibanez as our MC and Auctioneer for the evening.
A special video presentation highlighted the DSCBA’s Communication Readiness Program (CRP) that helps young members with complex communication needs get ready for school during a 6-week summer program. This was followed by the “cash paddle raise” which brought $77,100. Guests participated in a lively auction that included delectable desserts, getaway packages, sports memorabilia and more—all provided by generous individuals and businesses from far and wide.
Mark Traylor, Chevron District Sales Manager, presented Nancy LaBelle, DSCBA Executive Director, with a generous $28,052.87 donation made possible through coin boxes placed in Chevron stations throughout the Bay Area. We are grateful for Chevron’s support and their Empowering Sponsorship over the years.
The evening closed with a glow-in-the-dark dance party which was especially enjoyed by our DSCBA VIP’s! As a thank you, guests were treated to sweets from a giant candy bar.
The gala would not be possible without the incredible support from businesses and individuals who donated over 420 auction items, many in-kind services, over $40,000 in sponsorships/cash donations and 15 VIP Table Sponsors. Now that is a great way to celebrate 21!
A BIG THANK YOU to our Empowering Sponsor, Chevron, our Inspiring Sponsors, Nordstrom & Anonymous Donor, and VIP Wine Sponsors Las Positas Vineyards, Black Stallion Winery and Frank Family Vineyards for their wonderful support. We would also like to thank the following Advertising Sponsors: Diablo Country Club, Lexus of Pleasanton, Mass Mutual Northern California, Prestige Printing, Summit Financial Group and Wells Fargo Bank.

Our 20th Anniversary Gala was held on April 14, 2018 at Diablo Country Club. 340 people came out to celebrate this milestone and we raised a record $215,000. This amount of financial support will keep our programs going strong this year and into the start of 2019
We were fortunate to have KTVU Channel 2 Sports Director Mark Ibanez once again as M.C. for this elegant evening. Chelsea Werner, a Special Olympics gold medalist and model, was our guest of honor and her video was truly inspiring. We were also happy to acknowledge our Community Impact Award winners who are going above and beyond for our families and impacting the quality of people’s lives every day because of the compassion they have for others.
During the event we premiered a short film created for our 20th Anniversary celebration produced by Barrett Rodda with Story Short Films. The film is a testimonial from three families/members who have been deeply impacted by our services as far back as 20 years. Watch it here!
After dinner, guests participated in the dessert and live auctions. Thank you to everyone who opened their hearts and wallets to make the fund-a-need, silent and live auctions a huge success.
The live auction was followed by a glow-in-the-dark dance party which got everyone dancing to the beats of DJ Warren, the Gameday DJ.
The gala would not be possible without the incredible support from businesses and individuals who donated over 360 auction items, many in-kind services and over $20,000 in sponsorships/cash donations. We had a record 16 VIP Table Sponsors this year and we were sold out. Now that is a great way to celebrate an anniversary!
A big thank you to our Empowering Sponsor, Chevron, and our Inspiring Sponsor, Nordstrom, for your continued support. We would also like to thank Advertising Sponsor, Summit Financial Group, Event Sponsor, Diablo Country Club, and our VIP Wine Sponsors Acumen, Caddis and Las Positas Vineyards for their continued support.
Save the date of April 13, 2019 for next year when we celebrate 21 years. It’s guaranteed to be a fun event because we are all about the triplication of 21st chromosome which is where awesomeness lies.
